I’ll never forget the first time I walked into my high school art room greeted by a massive chalk mural entirely crosshatched across the chalkboard, announcing the theme for our class for the year. Instantly, I was in awe of my art teacher, Mr. Dave Hawbaker's, talent and just wanted to soak up everything he could teach me about making art!
When he taught us the basics of oil painting, he worked on his own masterpiece right at the front of the room while we worked. His artwork wasn’t just in the classroom- no, far from it. It was all over the the school in many communal spaces, whether it was created by just him or with his students. But no, that's not it- his art extended into our local community and city of Pittsburgh in the form of murals. There is such a feeling of pride walking past a massive mural in downtown Pittsburgh and knowing that YOUR teacher painted that. I had always loved making art, but Mr. Hawbajer was the 🔥 that ignited my soul to not only improve as an artist but to one day (hope to) inspire students by becoming an art teacher myself. Mission accomplished, Mr. Hawbaker.
Once I became a teacher I knew that I had to share my own true artistic abilities despite the age level I was teaching. For over 15 years I hung a mini gallery wall of some of my own paintings, or would keep a painting that I was in the process of working on, on an easel in my classroom.
